Create and Support an Arts and Culture Council

Submitted by Len Clark in Arts, Culture and Fun

The Citizens' Advisory Committee for Comprehensive Planning has asked us to study the feasibility of a central organization that could support the arts and culture of our county. It could provide a powerful web site to identify artistic and cultural places and events, identify artists and others engaged in creative activity, and host a common events calendar. It could look for grant opportunities, seek grant support and help individuals and organizations to seek grants when they could use help doing the necessary research and proposal writing.

Establish a local speakers bureau

Submitted by Chris Hardie in Education

Businesses, schools, social clubs, non-profits and communities of faith are always on the lookout for people who can come speak to their group knowledgably about a given topic or theme.  Richmond has a rich and diverse collection of people who are experts on a wide variety of topics - between our educational institutions, consultants, hobbyists and others, there's surely a great wealth of knowledge that we can help each other share more effectively.

Catalog and publicize past community growth studies and reports

Submitted by Chris Hardie in Regional Connections

Over the years, various organizations and government entities in our area have commissioned studies and reports related to the growth and success of our area.  Some of the studies have evaluated the feasibility of creating new facilities or organizations, while others have focused on taking stock of the resources and possibilities that exist here, and how best to make use of them.

Have more potluck meals

Submitted by Chris Hardie in Neighborhoods and Families

Potlucks are great ways to get to know your neighbors, co-workers, and others around you while sharing good food.  They can usually be done on short notice, and tend to provide more than enough food for everyone who comes, even if a few folks don't have time to prepare dishes.

Organizing a potluck can be as easy as picking a time and place, but you can also play around with the idea by having themes, trying to make dishes from local ingredients, etc.

After School Activities
Some kids go to dance, music, sports and other activities after school. And some kids go home to get yelled at and smacked all evening, so lets take a few hours a day and make after school activities a choice for those kids.

Join our Facebook Group "I Love Richmond Indiana"

Submitted by marionr in Neighborhoods and Families

Back years ago, about 10, I was at a Gus Macker basketball game on a Satruday am at IUE where hundreds of young people were participating in the sport. I recall sitting there and thinking to myself - how will these young people ever financially make it living in Richmond? Will they have to move away? I had hoped not, since I have three children of my own. As it turns out I had to move away due to the limited employment opportunities in Richmond. I recalled that Dr. Vermalley from IUE was a big proponent on the laws of economics, especially the law of Supply and Demand.

Richmond School System Single Website to post events and activities

Submitted by marionr in Education

I have been talking many times on the WHON Talkback radio show that has included talking with Aaron Stevens and Dr. B. to request that the school maintain one single website for anyone to visit that would show all school activities in one location. A calendar of sorts.

My reason: the school is that the school talks about money shorteges - this website would invite people of Richmond to visit these activities and that there is always a free will offering available.

Room-and-board-and-bandwidth incubator in the Starr District

Submitted by Michael Roberts in Business

Hi, all.  I bought a house here on N 11th back in May (cf. the houseblog) for the grand total of $8000, and since then I've been walking the dog past a lot of other heart-meltingly beautiful (but vacant) brick houses.  There's no economic reason to keep these houses around, unfortunately, so recently I've been trying to think of one before the city declares more of them unsafe; the idea that presents itself most obviously (to me) is to host entrepreneurs or other creative people.

Depot as Destination/Venue

Submitted by Lance Crow in Arts, Culture and Fun

Richmond needs something.  Some motivation, energy, vivacity, revitalization, and a rekindling of the desire to share experiences with other people in the community.  There is so much potential in this community for greatness.  Let's tap into the roots of this place we live.  Rejuvinate the rich history!  We need to bring this flesh to LIFE!  Richmond needs a better way to involve itself in the life of other communities as well.  Let's use Richmond's location to our advantage.  Specifically, the Depot.

Create a community pride campaign

Submitted by Chris Hardie

Sometimes, Richmond suffers from a lack of self-esteem that is self-perpetuating.  By showing each other that we are proud to live here and do business here, we can help counter the effects of that esteem problem.
