Gas Works Community Center

Submitted by jim hair in Historic Preservation

A place for the community to gather, not associated with any existing groupVeterans Museum.  The Cardinal Greenway trail public bathrooms, a Gorge Interpretive Center, and bike rental.  "Peace Garden".  "Open University" where members of the community could meet and teach others writing skills, gardening, digital video and music production.  A sculpture studio/welding shop to restore donated/abandoned bikes, as well as create bike racks and public sculpture.  A central site where people from all communities can meet.  The Gas Works has historic significance and has been part of studies as recently as a 1989 NEA Whitewater Gorge review, so much of the work has been started; it just needs to be updated and implemented.  What better place to create a new "green" community center, than Richmond's first power plant?

Glad this idea now has a champion in you, Jim!

The outstanding and varied architecture in Richmond/Wayne County is one of the things that can be used to differentiate our community from the bland, "francised" version of middle America.

This building is very unique.  Coupled with its location near the Whitewater Gorge and Cardinal Greenway Trail, it's certainly ripe for development.
