Catalog and publicize past community growth studies and reports

Over the years, various organizations and government entities in our area have commissioned studies and reports related to the growth and success of our area.  Some of the studies have evaluated the feasibility of creating new facilities or organizations, while others have focused on taking stock of the resources and possibilities that exist here, and how best to make use of them.

Create and Support an Arts and Culture Council

The Citizens' Advisory Committee for Comprehensive Planning has asked us to study the feasibility of a central organization that could support the arts and culture of our county. It could provide a powerful web site to identify artistic and cultural places and events, identify artists and others engaged in creative activity, and host a common events calendar. It could look for grant opportunities, seek grant support and help individuals and organizations to seek grants when they could use help doing the necessary research and proposal writing.

Install bike racks in key destination areas

A city Richmond's size is great for biking around, but if cyclists have to worry about their bikes being stolen or damaged when they get to their destination, they may be less likely to take advantage of the opportunity.  Bike racks really are a critical pieces of infrastructure for any urban area that wishes to attract visitors for shopping and browsing, and Richmond has gone without them for far too long.  In difficult economic times, it's a relatively low-cost and easy solution that makes our public spaces and key destinations even more attractive and accessible.

Create a local BALLE network

How can I help my customers understand that locally owned businesses are important to the strength of our community? What new business opportunities exist for our region in the emerging green economy?"

Create a Local Stock Market

Why do we send our savings accounts, retirement funds, pension funds, and other investments off to other communities? Let’s invest SOME of that in the success of the local community.

Local banks like First Bank Richmond already have some investment programs that guarantee you're investing your funds in the success of local businesses.  We could create other kinds of "stocks" that allow us to put our money where our mouths are.

Launch the Wayne County Time Bank

Time banking is simply about spending an hour doing something for somebody in your community. That hour goes into the Time Bank as a Time Dollar. Then you have a Time dollar to spend on having someone doing something for you. It's a simple idea, but it has powerful ripple effects in building community connections.
